Carmelita Tropicana ACT UP Fundraiser

Author: César Carrasco

Date: October 13, 1990

People: César Carrasco, Carmelita Tropicana

Description: Carmelita Tropicana is a writer and performance artist who imitated Carmen Miranda and did a bilingual stand-up performance comedy for this fundraiser. Carmelita appropriated and challenged Hollywood Latino stereotypes that were alive in the era, including Carmen Miranda who was viewed by many as a Latina caricature persona. Carmelita was a friend of the ACT UP Latina/o Caucus and, during these events, the LC would do outreach, distribute condoms, and connect with NYC's Latino community. Other locations that the LC held events included: the Nuyorican Poets Café, La Escuelita, and Charas.
